John GILBERT
Set As Default Person -
Name John GILBERT Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1840 Morwenstow, Cornwall, England
Gender Male Occupation 1864 Bridge, Kent, England
Railway Porter - was "of Bridge" when married so I assume he was working here
Occupation 1871 Railway guard Accident 29 Jun 1872 Sheerness, Sheppey, Kent, England
Hit by a railway crane brake handle - This was reported in the Whitstable Times for 6 July 1872.
John Gilbert was then "truck inspector" (they might have meant "goods inspector" for the Faversham district of the London, Chatham & Dover Railway. On Saturday 29 June he had taken a (hand worked) travelling crane to Sheerness to load a 7-ton lump of ironwork from the Dockyard on to a railway wagon. The brake failed, the handles were wrenched from the hands of the porters turning them, and the brake handle flew off and hit John Gilbert on the forehead, knocking him back several feet. The front of his skull was "battered in". He was lifted in to a first class carriage and taken by a train that was about to start to hospital in Chatham. At the time of writing the report, he had recovered consciousness, but "his restoration to health is despaired of".
In fact he must have made a better recovery and eventually gone back to work.
With thank to Tom Burnham for drawing my attention to this event.
