    Notes
    • There are other examples of a young woman having 1 or even 2 illegitimate children, who often didn't survive, and she usually subsequently married.
But on my tree (at least at the time of writing, when the tree has about 8000 people) this is unprecedented - a single woman with 4 children, the first born when she was 25, the last when she was 34.
Her parents do seem to have separated when this was unusual - did this lead her to think she was better off not living with a man? Did her children have 1 or more fathers? Was "poulterer" a mask for "the oldest profession" or was she a mistress to a married man?

I tend to suspect the latter - but without any good evidence, perhaps because it seems the least objectionable. Is there a clue to his name in the middle name of her first-born?

How did the family react? - well her mother doesn't seem to have reacted too strongly, since they were still living together in 1871 when Selina had 3 children. Of course, maybe her behaviour wasn't a result of her parents living apart, but her parents living apart may have been a result of Selina's behaviour. Perhaps her father through her out and her mother went too - to help Selina get by.

Selina was visiting her daughter Fanny in Folkstone at the time of the 1901 census.

If they'd had 15 children would they still have managed to find names beginning with 'S'?!
