Given that Edward married again in 1907 it would seem highly probably that the wife he married in 1902 had died by then. Looking at the two brides on the page, Hannah Maria and Sarah Ann, there was no death of a Hannah Maria to fit, but there was a death of a Sarah Ann as shown, on Sheppey (the most likely place) and who it can be seen was of a likely age to have married Edward.

Shows bachelor 29 year old Edward John Yates, a Labourer, resident Queenborough, married widow Sarah Ann Green, 29, no occupation shown, resident Murston.
Fathers were Edward Albert Yates, Labourer, and George Sivyer, deceased.
Married after banns, witnesses Walter Sivyer and Kate Constances Yates. (All signed)The 1911 census shows no children born to Edward's current marriage (to Rosa), but one child died. Presumably he meant from a previous marriage, clearly not Kate who was still with him, but I haven't managed to find his other child (several born on Sheppey in 1904 but none with a surname Sivyer or Green or similar). Perhaps Edward mis-understood the question as children by a wife who had died, or maybe there was a still-born child he is counting (childbirth was still not an uncommon cause of death and the length of time between daughter Kate's birth and Sarah's death means she could well have been giving birth again).

Rosa and her younger sister Eleanor both married Sheppey men and were both widowed, in 1906 and in 1907 respectively, then they married two brothers. It was not a double wedding (they married in different quarters), Eleanor marrying first in Q3.
The 1911 census confirms there had been no children of the marriage of Edward to Rosa.

Two young Yates women were with Edward at the time of the 1939 register whose birth registrations show their mother's maiden name as Chantler. It seems that Edward was probably living as though married to Alice long before he actually married her.
If that is the case, they presumably entered into a relationship between the death of Edward's second wife in 1914 and the birth of their first daughter in 1917.
Since Edward was left a widower in 1914 and Alice widowed in 1915 it is not clear why they did not marry. Perhaps in wartime it was more difficult to arrange and then they just didn't get around to it for a while.
