    • Where parents paid to place a child as an apprentice that child usually became an apprentice at the age of 14. Where the overseers of the poor placed a child or children from a poor family this usually happened at an earlier age, at one time from as young as 7 though the minimum age was later raised to 9. I suspect Thomas was a pauper apprentice, quite likely placed at the age of 9.

    • Thomas seems to have been reluctant to marry Elizabeth. He was believed to be the father of her son Henry, yet he didn't marry her before or soon after the birth. In September 1830 he obtained a marriage licence, but in 1831 there was a complaint about his refusal to pay for Henry's mainteance, and it was not until October that year that they married.
Maybe he and Elizabeth had been courting but he did not believe Henry wast his son, hence the reluctance.
