    Carter on farm
    • A carter on the farm of William Mudge, who had 150 acres and employed 11 labourers and 2 boys in 1861. Three of these employees were living in the farmhouse with the farmer's family and other farm servants and one domestic servant. In 1861 the 3 youngest children in the Mudge family were shown as scholars, but the eldest were described as 'Farmer's Son' and 'Farmer's daur.' - they were probably involved in work on the farm too.
Still on the farm of William Mudge in 1871, but now described simply as 'ag lab'. Philip was still living on the farm, which now only employed 6 labourers and 2 boys, with only 2 of the labourers living in. (The name of the farm is not clear in the 1871 census image on Ancestry, but it does not look like Decoy - I think the household might have moved. William Mudge's will might clarify; to see).

    • Thomas seems to have been reluctant to marry Elizabeth. He was believed to be the father of her son Henry, yet he didn't marry her before or soon after the birth. In September 1830 he obtained a marriage licence, but in 1831 there was a complaint about his refusal to pay for Henry's mainteance, and it was not until October that year that they married.
Maybe he and Elizabeth had been courting but he did not believe Henry wast his son, hence the reluctance.
