William GRIGGS
Set As Default Person -
Name William GRIGGS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Est 1710 (possibly), Birchington, Kent, England
- Date a guess based on date of marr and wife's dob; place a guess - I've seen this was where he was "of" when he marr. (pos IGI?) though the KFHS transcript shows him as otp.
Both could be correct - he could have been born in Birchington but working in St Lawrence at the time of his marriage.
If he was born in Birchington then he was most likely born in 1695 or 1720, as there were baptisms of William Griggs there in both of these years. The one baptised in 1720 was the son of a William and Mary, so it could well be that this William was baptised in 1720, the son of the William baptised in 1695.
Baptised 10 Jul 1720 All Saints’ Church, Birchington, Kent, England
Gender Male Will A bequest to his heirs? - Instead of doing the conventional thing and writing a will, William passed on money by simply telling his son it was hidden somewhere in the house!
It was discovered a couple of years after his death, as the following article, which appeared in a number of newspapers, recounts:
"About two years since died at Birchington in the Isle of Thanet, Mr William GRIGGS, many years Master of a Windmill at that place, on his death bed he informed his son, who is now master of the said Mill, that he had buried a quantity of money in the house he lived in, at Birchington. The son, after his fathers decease, searched after the money, but could not discover where it was. The house was let to another person, who has lived in it ever since, till within a quarter of a year, when he quitted it. The house being now empty, the son of the said Miller, determined on a second search, when under the pavement in the kitchen he found a clock containing a bag with 735 guineas. The son has given half this sum to his sisters children, who are left without a father or mother, their parents being dead some time."
