Charles Albert Pitts LANDS
Set As Default Person -
Name Charles Albert Pitts LANDS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 18 Mar 1848 Blackawton, Devon, England
- Birthplace from censuses, year from FreeBMD index, date on naval papers 18 Mar 1845 - I suspect either a mis-transcription or false data when joining. I guess 18 March is correct, but year wrong.
GRO ref: LANDS, Charles Albert Pitts q1 1848 Kingsbridge RD 9 372; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Hyne Pitts [i.e. it looks like she (or whoever registered the birth) gave both her former surnames - that from her previous marriage AND her maiden name]
Gender Male Military Service From 11 Sep 1865 to 1881 Royal Navy - Naval papers showed Charles volunteered in 1865.
The 1871 census shows Charles was a stoker; by 1881 he was a leading stoker.
Residence 1871 28, Gloucester Street, Morice Town, Devonport, Devon, England
- Charles appears twice on the 1871 census. He is on a list of those not on board the guard ship HMS Indus which was in the Hamoaze on census night (scrolled across the front page is 'Book Not to be abstracted' ('Not' underlined 3 times) - presumably because all those not on it should be included in the census elsewhere.
He was also with his wife Jane as a household in 28 Gloucester Street. Also at this address were 6 other households, 1 other couple, a wife, so presumably the husband, an out Greenwich pensioner, usually present, a father and son and three families, one of 8, and in the back of the house 2 families of 7.
Head of the family of 8 was like Charles a stoker in the Royal Navy, while the father of the father and son was a 2d Asst Engineer in the RN.
Head of one of the other families was a smith, perhaps this influenced Charles in becoming a tinsmith after he left the navy.
Occupation 1891 20, Fort Street, Devonport, Devon, England
Tinsmith and grocer - Charles was shown as neither employee nor employer
Living in Clowance ward, Charles, Jane and Ethel were living in a 4 room house.
Residence 1901 54, West Hill Road, Mutley, Plymouth, Devon, England
- Charles, Jane and Ethel were in 3 rooms of the house at the time of the census, with another family of 3 in a single room.
It was also the address from which Ethel and her husband married later in the same year and which was their family home when her first two children were born; p resumably Ethel continued to live with her parents while her husband was at sea.
Occupation 1901 Plymouth, Devon, England
Odd jobs - Shown as working on his own account
Residence 1911 Jubele Cottage, Pensilva, Cornwall, England
- Charles and Jane were living in a 2 room cottage, Charles being a naval pensioner.
Died Mar Q 1935 Plymouth Reg Dist, Devon, England
- FreeBMD: Lands, Charles A P q1 1935 aged 86 Plymouth RD 5b 391; GRO online index shows middle names as Albert Pitts
(the only death of any Charles Lands up to 1940 who had age consistent with birth 1844-1850)

- GRO ref: Q3 Plymouth 5b 428
Two other children were born who could be the children of Charles and Jane (i.e. surname Lands, born Stoke Damerel or Plymouth RDs between 1870 and 1890); both died in infancy and would not have shown in any census:
William Charles, born Q2 1871 (Stoke D 5b 354), died Q3 1871 (Plymouth 5b 190)
Mabel Elizabeth, born Q4 1879 (Stoke D 5b 349), died Q3 1880 (Stoke D 5b 239)
(Mabel Elizabeth is in the burial register for the parish of Stoke Damerel; parents are not named but abode is given as 3 Clarence Place; died 22 Aug, bur 25 Aug, aged 9 months)
It seems likely that these were the children of Charles and Jane as the 1911 census shows that they had had 3 children, 2 of whom were then dead.
Children + 1. Ethel LANDS, b. 1878, Morice Town, Devonport, Devon, England
