Aged 78 at the time of the 1851 census he was then shown as retired - 'Superannuated Smith Dk Yd' - almost certainly referring to the RN dockyard.

In 1851 Robert was head of household with his son George and George's wife and baby daughter living with him.

Family 1 Sarah, b. Abt 1783, bur. 17 Jul 1833, St. Mary and St. Sexburga’s Church, Minster, Sheppey, Kent, England (Age ~ 50 years) Married - Probably the Robert who married Sarah Dennis in Sittingbourne in March 1801.
There was a Sarah Swiferton DENNIS baptised in Sittingbourne in 1785, also a Sarah Dennes baptised in Teynham in 1779 and a Sarah Dynes baptised in Challock in 1780, as well as other's further afield (best match on date from age at death was a Sarah Dennis baptised 1783 in Maidstone). The couple who married in 1801 had daughters
Mary Ann - baptised 7 Jun 1801 at Sittingbourne, St Michael (probably the Mary Ann buried 28 Mar 1802 in Sittingbourne)
Sarah - baptised 4 Dec 1803 at Sittingbourne, St Michael
If this couple were the above there were probably more children between the above and those shown here.
Regardless, could be missing other children, as not found the baptisms of all those with Robert in census years etc.
One could be the William buried aged 8 in 1833 (abode Sheerness, buried Minster).
Others might have been the George of Sheerness who died in infancy and was buried in 1815, the infant Robert of Sheerness buried in 1825 and the Martha of Sheerness buried aged 1 in 1820. All buried in Minster-in-Sheppey. However, Martha's was a parish funeral and I would have thought that a dockyard blacksmith would have earned enough not to be dependant on the parish.

Did Robert remarry in 1841? A Robert did marry in Sheppey RD in the Dec Quarter that year.
The brides on the page were a Mary PAVETT, a Louisa BASTARD and an Elizabeth Mary BOWTON.
There was no wife with him in the 1851 census but he was shown as married rather than widower. A Mary Burrus, aged 67, abode Sheerness, was buried in Minster in 1854 - could this have been Robert's second wife?
Looking for a Mary Pavett in the 1841 census and a Mary Burrus in 1851 does find one who appears to be one and the same person; in both censuses she was living in Bethel Passage and running a lodging house, and her age matches the Mary Burrus buried in 1854.
So it seems clear that Robert and Mary did marry, although why they were not living together is not so obvious. Since Mary was in the same place in both censuses but Robert wasn't I suspect he moved in with her on marriage, but maybe they were both too set in their ways and couldn't adapt, and so Robert moved back to living with family.
