    • Shown as at Hysted Cottage in 1851, at Highsted in 1861, back to Hysted Cottage in 1871. 1 Highsted Cottage in 1881.

In 1851 with her husband (head of the household) and her three oldest children, and also her sister Emma, brother Amos (a labourer) and two other labourers (23 year old Thomas Dean and 20 year old John Sharpe).
By 1861 both Emma and Amos had married, and Harriet and Francis had 6 children, with another on the way. Just one boarder was living with them, 18 year old Thomas Mathews.
By 1871 Harriet and Francis' oldest 4 children had left home. William, the oldest, was married, whilst the youngest of the 4 was close by, working as a servant in Hysted House (the farmhouse). (The other two yet to be investigated). Although the oldest 4 had moved on, there were the next four present, although the 9th and youngest was not - he had sadly died aged 9 months and never made it to be recorded in a census.
At the time of the 1881 census it seems that just children 6 to 8 remained at home. Daughter Ellen had married and her youngest at the time, one year old Annie Crayden, was a visitor staying with her grandparents.
Residence 1891  10, Harold Road, Sittingbourne, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • It appears that at sometime between 1881 and 1891 Harriet and Francis had moved from Hysted Cottage into 10, Harold Road. As Francis was now 76 it might be imagined this was due to retirement, but he was still shown as an agricultural labourer. All of their children had now flown the nest - but son Charles had returned!
In addition, Alfred was now married and although he was not present his wife and two daughters were present, recorded as visitors.
