    Notes
    • Not only do his Christian names give a clue as to his father, but his marriage record gives his father's name as James Whitehead.
This could be either James b c. 1788 or his son b c 1811. The latter seems more likely to me (although James senior was very fecund, fathering 18 legitimate children!)

James appears to have grown up with his maternal grandparents, being the son of their eldest daughter, Eleanor alias Ellen. Both he and his mother were with them at the time of the 1841 census, and he was with them in 1851 - shown as 'son'.

    • GRO ref: Clark, James to Grigsby, Maria q4 1865 Hollingbourne RD 2a 1015

(The 1881 census shows that James' wife Maria was born Hucking, so it was clearly this Maria who married him and not the other Maria Grigsby whose birth was registered in Hollingbourne RD in 1846, as checking her mother's maiden name, and finding her parents marriage and her with her mother in the 1851 census shows the other Maria was born in Boxley.)
