The informant for the birth was one A. E. Ruby, present at the birth. Looking in the 1921 census shows that this was Ann Elizabeth Ruby, a by then 39 year old, wife of a skilled bricklayer, employed by the Admiralty Royal Naval Hospital in Gillingham. Since Dorothy's father also worked for the RN, as a shipwirght, maybe her parents knew the Rubys through the naval link or as neighbours. It is not clear if Ann Ruby was a midwife or simply present for support.
