  • Name Susanna MARTEN
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1660
    • Just an estimate based on date of her marriages and when she had children.
    Baptised
    • Possibly the Susanna Martin, dau of Nathaniel and Margaret, bapt 20 May 1649. This would make her a little old to be the mother of Mary, baptised 1702, IF Mary was baptised that year. However, with the previous known child baptised in 1693 she may have been born a few years earlier.

I did wonder if Susanna was the sister of Sarah Marten, mother of Sarah Forwood who married Susanna's son Edward. The Forwood family tree shows Sarah as the one baptised in St. Lawrence in July 1663, dau of Hen(d(r)y and ??, but there was another baptised in Oct that year - dau of Nathaniel. (Nathaniel was a popular name with the Mart(e/i/y)ns, so it cannot be assumed that the Sarah bapt 1663 was a sister of the Susanna bapt 1649)

Whatever the relationship between Susanna and Sarah, it may well have been a family link that led to Edward Goatham and Sarah Forwood meeting and marrying.

    • KFHS transcript CD 29 - 1741 Nov 24 Susanna GOATHAM Widow
    Notes
    • Curling was a very common name in St. Lawrence. A quick look through the baptism list (KFHS transcript - CD 29) and I failed to spot a Susanna of a suitable age.
I may have missed her, the entry could be missing, she could have been a widow at marriage, or from another parish ...

In the will of her son Edward Goatham he refers to "John Curling my brother". This makes me think that John Curling must have been a half-brother and Susanna had been previously married (illegitimacy at this time was rare).
I have found the family as shown for Susanna, though no death of a John to make her eligible to remarry in 1688.

John senior must have died prior to Susanna's 1688 marriage. There is no suitable burial at Ramsgate.
Maybe he was a mariner and died at sea or otherwise away from home.

    • From PR image (on FMP, viewed 10 Dec 2012):
"Edw Goattam & Susanna Curling married the 4 June"
Whilst there is no indication of marital status, the entry immediately before shows "Daniel Stephens & Wid. Mary Cocke ..." (my emphasis) which may suggest Susanna was a spinster, although her son Edward's reference to "my brother John Curling" and a family to fit with John being her son suggests she wasn't.
    Offspring Son Robert?
    • In 1731 there was a Chancery Court case in which one of a number of plaintiffs was Robert Goatham, a butcher of St Giles in the Fields [London].
I'm not certain who this Robert was, but it seems quite likely he was a son of Edward and Susanna.
      1. This family had links to London - their son John and daughter Mary both married there.
      2. There is a gap between known children, with baptisms every other year 1689 to 1693, then none until 1702. It seems likely they did have more children born during this gap.
      3. Son John named a son Robert. John was into using family names '96 his first son was named Edward, his father's name, also that of a brother, then he had one named John, presumably after himself. But why did he use the name Robert? I have no close relation Robert in his or his wife's family. Could it be because there was a missing brother Robert?
