The will of John Goatham (c. 1568 - 1611)
(a 10 x great grandfather OR a 10 x great uncle of mine)
A fairly short will, written down after John died. After bequests to his 3 children. He left £4 to his son, but only £3 to each of his daughters - but the latter to inherit when they reached the age of 18 while his son would have to wait until he'd reached the age of 21.
Everything else, no detail specified, he left to his wife - who was also his Executrix. His brother Richard was appointed overseer and to see his children would…Buried 5 Feb 1611/12 St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England

Notes - I believe John was the son of Richard, but Richard had 2 sons called John. Both of Richard's sons called John were mentioned (i.e. alive) when he wrote his will. I don't know which moved to Herne - I suspect the other was the one who lived in Burmarsh, dying in 1622. If I have them the wrong way around (50% chance that I do) all that is wrong is the baptism dates!
I don't know for certain that a John bapt in Chartham (in 1566 or 1568, son of Richard) and the John who died in Herne, in 1611, are one and the same but I've linked the 2 here and in my opinion it's gone from being a possibility to a probability, even a near certainty, since a link between the Chartham and Herne Goathams has been confirmed by the lease of land in Chartham to Richard Gotham "of Chislet" in 1614 - and PR entries make it clear that Richard Goatham of Chislet had his children baptised in Herne.
The same land in Chartham, Salter's Platt, was leased at an earlier date (1596) by "John Gotham, husbandman of Eastry". I think that John Gotham must be this one, though it is the first I knew of a link with Eastry. The lease is in the Canterbury Cathedral Archives - I have now seen this.
Whilst it could have been his brother John who was referred to, he didn't die until 1622, and the new 1614 lease to a Richard Gotham fits better with the previous leaseholder having died - which this one had.
