John GOATHAM
Set As Default Person -
Name John GOATHAM Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Baptised 6 Feb 1566/67 St. Mary’s Church, Chartham, Kent, England
Gender Male Will Written
The will of John Goatham (c. 1566 - 1622)
(probably a 9 x great uncle of mine)
John's will is one of the few family wills I have found in which details of furniture and furnishings are given. I particularly enjoy reading these. As well as that, he thought about his wife's need for wood for fuel.
John left a bequest to just one sibling, Susan, not counting a possible bequest to his brother Richard, which seems more of a payment / thanks for taking care of his daughter Margaret.
Most of his estate was to go to his 2 surviving…Occupation 1622 Burmarsh, Kent, England
Husbandman - According to both his will (1622) and his daughter Margery's marriage licence (1622/23)
Died 1622 Burmarsh, Kent, England
Buried 18 Nov 1622 All Saints’ Church, Burmarsh, Kent, England
- From KFHS CD 29
Siblings4 brothers and 5 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch
GOATHAM, d. Yes, date unknown (Grandfather)
Cicely FRED, b. Est 1540, d. Feb 1595/96, Chartham, Kent, England
(Age ~ 56 years) (Mother)
Notes - Both of Richard's sons called John were mentioned (i.e. alive) when he wrote his will. I don't know which moved to Herne - I suspect the other was the one who lived in Burmarsh, dying in 1622. If I have them the wrong way around (50% chance that I do!) all that is wrong is the baptism dates!
I have also equated the John who had a daughter Margery in Ewell in about 1599 with this John because from his will I know that John had a daughter Margery, who he made Executrix, but who doesn't appear to be in the baptismal register in Burmarsh. This Margery would fit perfectly, not only old enough to be trusted as Executrix but also unmarried at the time as the will suggests.
As well as the Burmarsh family shown here, a Thomas Gotam was buried on 13 Jan 1615/16 in Burmarsh (IGI and KFHS CD) - not shown as son of John, I suspect he was his nephew, though it's possible John had a son Thomas whose baptism I have not found .
In John's will he mentions a brother Richard and a sister Susan, which fits nicely with the Chartham family.
IGI also has the burial of a Jane Gotam on 23 Sept 1611.
The burial entry for Abigaill, though, shows that she not Jane was John's wife.
Spelt 'Gotham' in wills index, but 'Gotam' in the will itself. 'Gotam' in the Burmarsh PR for the baptism of his children, his 2nd marr and all the various burials.
Surname Gothm. when John's first wife Annes was buried

Family 1 Annes, bur. 15 Oct 1597, St. Peter and St. Paul’s Church, Temple Ewell, Kent, England
Married - Marriage not found in any index in 2017; could well survive in ATs, but they are not generally indexed at this time.
Have browsed PRs for Temple Ewell from 1597 back to start (1582) and no indication that they married there.
I expect PR entries that are only browsable at present, and ATs, will be indexed in the future and I hope to find the marriage then. Too many places they could have married to look at all at the present.

Family 2 Abigaill GYLES, bur. 13 Mar 1613/14, All Saints’ Church, Burmarsh, Kent, England
Married 26 Jan 1598/99 St. Anthony’s Church, Alkham, Kent, England
- Date here as on KFHS transcript, CD 16
Tyler index - image on Ancestry - unclear scribble - looks like 1596
Now seen the PR (image on FMP, viewed 18 Feb 2013)
Entries are out of order - PR must have been written up at a later date (though style of handwriting is consistent with C16th) - but clearly seems to be 1598 (presumably OS)

Family 3 Jone WILSON, bur. 6 Dec 1624, All Saints’ Church, Burmarsh, Kent, England
Married 24 Oct 1614 All Saints’ Church, Burmarsh, Kent, England
- Only marriage is too late to be John the father of Elizabeth and Margaret and prob John, too early to be marr of John. Very few Gotam etc. entries so I'm guessing it was 2nd marr of this John (no status of John or Jone shown in the PR)
