With Rider wills in the Herne area going back to the 1480s I am optimistic about tracing this family back before the start of PRs - though will have to brush up on my Latin and my secretary hand!.
The East Kent wills index (1396-1659) shows a no. of Riders in the Herne area (Herne, Hoath, Reculver, Chislet) left wills in this period.
Twelve wills are listed under the surname Rider (1512-1640, 5 Herne, 1 Chislet, 1 Reculver, 1 Chislet Herne, 2 Hoath Reculver),
11 under Rydar (1487-1543, of which 4 were of Herne, 1 Hoath Reculver),
1 Rydare (1545 - Herne),
3 under Ridar (1495 - 1558, all Canterbury)
10 under Ryder (1505-1647, 3 Herne, 1 Recluver, 1 Chislet),
1 Rydere in 1396 - no place given and only probate survives
1 Ryde - is this the same name? - 1483, Minster in Sheppey
Chislet: includes a John Rider of Chislet (1612) and a Joane of Chislet and Herne, made a will 1618, probate 1619. The only other to mention Chislet was one of Anthony Ryder (probate 1505).
