  • Name Thomas GRIGSBY
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
Baptised 30 May 1643  St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Marden, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • KFHS transcript CD25
described as son of "William and Sibbell"
    Gender Male
    Bequest 4 Mar 1661/62
    In his father's will
    • Thomas, together with his brother James, was left his father William's house and land in his will.
There was to be an equal division of the house and land when their mother Sibbella died "and not before". However, she was to leave another 42 years after her husband, by which time Thomas's family had all grown up (the youngest was aged 22 when their grandmother died) so this may have limited the value of the bequest to him.
In addition, that which remained after paying out the other legacies, debts and funeral expenses was to be divided between William's executors, i.e. Thomas and his mother Sibbell "for there parte and paines".
    Executor / Trustee 4 Mar 1661/62
    • Thomas was made an executor of his father's will, together with his mother.
    The will of William Grigsby
    The will of William Grigsby
    (a 9 x gt grandfather of mine)
    Will 17 Jan 1724/25
    Written
    Occupation to 1732
    Gunsmith
    • Shown as such in his will and probate inventory
Buried 17 Jul 1732  St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Marden, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    • KFHS CD 25 ("Thomas Grigsby" - aff. 23) - I am guessing burial was this Thomas as I haven't found another burial in Marden to match; given I think he had 3 wives and a widow buried in the parish I think he would have been too!
The one who died in 1732 left a will (to be seen) which should confirm which Thomas it was. It was written in 1725 - in my experience, people rarely wrote a will other than shortly befor death unless they were quite elderly, which does suggest it was this Thomas.
    Probate Inventory 6 Aug 1732
    Taken
    • Exhibited in Court the 6 April 1733
Probate 6 Apr 1733  Archdeaconry Court, Canterbury, Kent, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location
    Died
    • Although a death in 1732 i.e. aged about 89 seemed a possibility to view with caution, his will mentions children from his first (Alice) through to Guy, the last whose baptism date I have, as well as 2 others, confirming it was this Thomas who died in 1732.

    • From KFHS CD 25 - entry no. 904:  1685 19 Aug Thomas GRIGSBY of Marden TO Silvester GRINSTED otp

Thomas's will shows that he had 2 more children whose baptisms I am not currently aware of, a son Edward and a daughter Elizabeth (married surname Maxted).

Edward is listed 3rd of the 4 sons still living, suggesting he was born after William but before Guy. He could therefore be a son of Thomas with his 3rd wife Sylvester or his 4th, Anne. Similarly, Elizabeth was the last of his 4 surviving daughters mentioned, suggesting she was born after Sylvester, and so could also be the daughter of Sylvester or of Anne.

    • From West Kent marriage index (compiled by Sydney Smith, on KFHS CD 36)
Shows Thomas Grigsby of Marden married An Champion.

It appears that the PR does not show whether Ann was a widow or a spinster. Whilst the fact that Ann had children with Thomas indicates that she was younger than him, marrying a 54 year old Ann was quite likely a older bride than most and may well have been a widow.

Thomas may have had more children with Anne, but I think the two for whom I do not know of baptisms were (as I show them) more likely the offspring of Sylvester. See notes attached to marriage with Sylvester. There was about a 17 month gap between Thomas and Ann marrying and having their first known child. Time for one child who survived infancy before John, but only if Ann was pregnant at marriage.
