Elisabeth COULTHARD
Set As Default Person -
Name Elisabeth COULTHARD Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1740 - Shown as aged 31 when she died (in the burial register)
Gender Female Buried 16 May 1771 St. Mary Magdalene’s Church, Bermondsey, London, England
- The burial register is wonderfully detailed, apart from lacking any note of relations.
It does however indicate where the deceased was resident, though in Elizabeth's case I'm not sure what it says - looks like "New ood L"
It also shows the cost. The total cost, as for several other adults on the same and adjacent pages, was 6s. 4d., the most common cost for an adult in this small sample.
The cost was broken down:
Minister: 0 : 2 : 4
Clerk 0 : 0 : 6
Sexton 0 : 2 : 6
GD [grave digger] 0 : 1 : 0
In a separate column is shown
Bell 3
Gd 2
5
I don't know whether this would have been pence or shillings!
The cost of burying children was less, principally because the cost for the sexton and gravedigger were less. The bell and ground also only cost 1(d/s?) each. Where adult funerals cost more, it appears to be principally because the Minister's charges were more - in one case 8s. 4d. I don't know if this was based on ability to pay, or if extra services were provided.
