Elizabeth ADAMS
Set As Default Person -
Name Elizabeth ADAMS Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1782 Bishopsbourne, Kent, England
- Age given as 65 (rounded down) in 1841 census and 77 in 1851 suggest a year of birth of abt 1774; birthplace Bishopsbourne is from the 1851 and 1861 censuses.
Using this data assumes these entries were for the same Elizabeth as the one - name given as Mary in 1841 census.
FreeBMD finds no Richared Roses marrying an Elizabeth in Kent in the period 1841 - 1851 so I think Mary is an error.
Age still recorded as 77 in 1861 - but Elizabeth was then living in the Workhouse, and details were often less accurate.
On the otherhand, an Elizabeth Adams was bapt in Bishopsbourne in 1782, no Adams families in Bridge where Elizabeth was living at the time of her marriage so I suspec this was her baptism.
Baptised 24 Feb 1782 St. Mary’s Church, Bishopsbourne, Kent, England

Resident in the workhouse - The admission entry for Elizabeth shows that she was in class 6 for diet, and number 47 was affixed to her clothes.
Residence 1861 The Union Workhouse, Bridge, Kent, England
- Age still shown as 77 - as it was in 1851! But at 87 Elizabeth may well have had memory problems, and no relation to know and provide the correct info.
I have checked and failed to find any other Bishopsbourne-born Elizabeth Roses b c 1774 - 1784 who could have been this one. And there are also no Bridge RD deaths for an Elizabeth Rose in the period 1851-1861 which suggested she was still alive.
Died 26 Feb 1862 The Union Workhouse, Bridge, Kent, England
Cause: Decay of nature - Died of "deacy of nature". Age given as 77 on her death cert.
GRO ref: ROSE, Elizabeth Q1 1862 Bridge RD 2a 364; GRO online index shows age at death as 77

Notes - (Research):I'm not too confident about the ancestry of Elizabeth. It seems reasonable to suppose she was the dau of Wm and Ann - i.e. that her baptism was in the same place as her birth. But Wm and Ann clearly weren't married in Bishopsbourne, neither were they baptised or buried here.
Their first child bapt in Bishopsbourne was bapt in 1777. Looking on the IGI there was a Wm and Ann married in Ramsgate in 1776 and another couple in Ickham in 1775.
Ickham is close enough that this could easily be the couple - but might there be other contenders in parishes not on the IGI?
Several trees on Ancestry have Richard married to an Elizabeth Mary Woods in Pirbright, Surrey, and himself the child of a couple married there. One move from Pirbright is conceivable, but given that the census shows Richard's and Elizabeth's birthplaces these trees imply a highly improbable (for that time) to-ing and fro-ing between the Kingston area and Pirbright.

I have a DNA match with a descendant of daughter of Thomas, brother of my ancestor Elizabeth, my brother has a match with a son of the same Thomas - suggests I probably have the right parents for my ancestor Elizabeth, i.e. a William and Ann ADAMS, althougth it is possible I link to Thomas in a different way.

I can't be sure that the Wm and Ann Adams who had the family at Bishopsbourne were the Wm Adams and Ann Browning who married at Ickham.
HOWEVER, the evidence does point to it being them.
Clearly there were, as expected, a number of couples called William and Ann ADAMS in Kent around this time. Looking at baptisms of children soon after the Ickham marriage recorded with these parents names there were families in Leeds, Bexley, Broomfield, Lydd and, closer to Ickham, Margate and Bishopsbourne. The Leeds, Bexley and Broomfield couples can be easily dismissed, as they were having children before 1775, as well as being an unlikely distance from Ickham. Ickham to Lydd is about 30 miles ... Margate about 14 ... Bishopsbourne 5 miles village to village, but the nearest part of a deatched part of Ickham to the end of Bishopsbourne is less than half a miles. In addition to the distances making Bishopbourne the most likely, a William Adams married Ann from the parishes of Winchelsea and Icklesham in 1774, parishes adjacent to Lydd. In 1776 a William ADAMS married an Ann in St. Laurnce in Thanet, an adjacent parish to Margate - almost certaily the parents of the children baptised in the latter.
There seem to have been no other marriages of a William Adams to an Ann within 20 miles of Bishopsbourne in the 10 years prior to the first Bishopsbourne baptism.

There are 2 queries:
1. was the Ann who my Wm Adams was married to a Browning?
Need to do a more thorough search of Wm Adams marriages to an Ann in the area (I have tried tracing the Browning tree a little in case it yields info. e.g. is there a Browning will referring to Ann by her married name?)
2. Do I have the right parents for Ann Browning?
In Ickham at this date few marriages showed bachelor or spinster etc. One in 1774 did show a bride, who was 'of this parish' as a widow; the only 2 not too distant in time that show a bride as spinster she was from another parish. The lack of any description may suggest she was a spinster.
Both were otp. Witnesses were Thomas Cotton and John Denn. John Denn(e) was a witness to most marriages - probably parish clerk. Who was Thomas Cotton? - is there a clue as to whether I have the right Ann Browning marrying Wm Adams. (see notes attached to Ann Browning for more info about the 2)
There was another Adams - Browning marr: Ann Adams to Edward Browning, banns read in Bishopsbourne, both otp, 1782. Ann Browning had a brother Edward b c 1751 (NS) but there was also an Edward b 1758, both Ickham.

Banns of marriage From 11 May 1800 to 12 Jun 1800 St. Peter’s Church, Bridge, Kent, England
- "Richard Rose of the Parish of Bishopsbourne and Elizabeth Adams of this Parish"
From PR image (on FMP) which shows 3 readings on 11 May 1800, 26 May 1800, 12 Jun 1800, though these dates may not be quite right. Banns were read on a Sunday, and although 11 May was a Sunday in 1800, 26 May was a Monday and 12 June a Thursday!
They were also supposed to be read for 3 consecutive weeks, and although in chapels which may only have had a service every 3 weeks they were sometimes read at 3 week intervals rather than weekly in the parish church as the law seemed to require, Bridge was a parish and would have been expected to have services every Sunday.
Married 21 Jun 1800 St. Peter’s Church, Bridge, Kent, England
- Curiously, the banns were read in Bishopsbourne because Richard was of the parish, but the marriage register shows him as of Kingstone. Possibly abode and where he was born / came from had been confused - the latter shouldn't matter for banns and marriage registers.
Neither banns nor marriage register for Bridge show marital status for either Richard or Elizabeth.
The marriage was witnessed by another Richard Rose and a Sarah Rose - I guess these were the groom's father and sister.
