Harriet ANDREWS, [Father?]
Set As Default Person -
Name Harriet ANDREWS Suffix [ONS gp] [Father?] Relationship
with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Dec Q 1841 Herne, Kent, England
- From 1851 census where age given as 9
GRO ref: Webb, Harriette q4 1841 W. Ashford RD [in paper index] 5 19; GRO online index does not show a mother's name, suggesting she was born illegitimate. It also shows the RD as Blean, and I believe this is correct - it was Blean (see below).
No father shown in baptism entry, but Harriet was shown as Charles' daughter in the 1851 census. Whether he was actually her biological father I don't know, but I think it unlikely. She married as a Webb, and the PR entry when she married shows her father as unknown, suggesting he wasn't. On the otherhand, the mother's maiden name was recorded as Andrews for 4 of her children, and Webb for only two. Charles' will suggests he treated her as a daughter, naming her as one of his children, and since the daughters come first in birth order she was listed first. Given that some illegitimate people would invent a father when marrying (or perhaps name a father invented by their mother) it does seem strange that Harriet did not name him when she married - unless the priest or Parish Clerk knew that she had been born illegitimate and so was not legally Charles' daughter.
I have an atDNA match with a descendant of Harriet, to whom I am a 5th cousin once removed, if Harriet was Charles' daughter, but I am also related to her in another way (also 5c 1r).
Research re Registration District
Date and lack of a mother's maiden name (suggesting born illegitimate) are a good fit for this Harriet, but it would seem more likely the birth would have been in Blean RD. Interestingly, the GRO online index does show the birth as in Blean RD, but it agrees with the vol and page in the original index, and all the other entries on that page have been entered in the original index as being in West Ashford. However, they all show as Blean in the online index.
The timing is unfortunate - almost ten years before the next census, plenty of time for families to move or for children to die and a lot of the names are fairly common ones. One of the less common is Fanny Denne, who appears in the 1851 census as born in Reculver, which was in Blean RD, not in nor particularly close to West Ashford RD.
Baptised 28 Nov 1841 St. Martin’s Church, Herne, Kent, England

Shown as Harriet Webb, daughter of Louisa, a single woman, abode Herne.
Gender Female Also known as Harriet WEBB Died Sep Q 1917 Dover Reg Dist, Kent, England
- In the 1911 census so after that. In Sutton RD at the time of the 1911 census, so this would seem to be her death, despite the addition of a middle name (it is the best fit - age is right, and there is none to fit without a middle name). The middle name is a likely one, being her mother's Christian name.
