    Notes
    • A Benedict Bastard of Stokenham made his mark ("B") on the oath in 1723 (at Kingsbridge) - possibly a relation of William.
    • (Research):A William b c 1712 and Elizabeth b c 1715 are buried at Slapton (I have a pic of their gravestone). Looks like stone was erected after the death of Wm (1785) rather than Eliz (Feb 1755) - and this latter date precludes this Eliz from being the mother of the younger children shown here - incl my ancestor Susanna.
(They were of Alston - in the East Allington direction from Slapton village)
If this was my Wm's first marriage he would have had to have remarried quickly for another child of his, presumably born to a 2nd wife rather than a late baptism of a child of his 1st wife, to be baptised in Mar 1756. The DFHS index would be expected to show a marr in 1755 or 6 but no marr of a Wm to an Eliz at this time is found.
There were quite a number of Bastard families in the area, and Wm and Eliz were such common names that 2 similarly named couples in neighbouring parishes is not that much of a co-incidence.
