(from The South Eastern Gazette, Saturday 30 August 1879, p.4, col. 3, oe of the items under the heading 'Canterbury')

Using Obscene Language. - At the City Petty
Sessions on Thursday, Henry Charrison, an ex-police-
man and landlord of the Three Compasses public-
house, St. Peter's-street, was summoned for using
obscene language on Saturday near the police-station.
Defendant said that on the day in question as he was
walking up Pound-lane, he accidentally knocked the
cap of a man named Atkins into the road with this
umbrella, and Atkins immediately turned on him,
striking him a violent blow beside his right eye with a
stick, causing a severe gash. Just then a policeman
came out, and he (defendant) asked him to take Atkins
into custody for assaulting him. This the constable
would not do. No bad language was used as was
alleged on the part of the prosecution. A man named
George Dunn corroborated this account. The Bench,
however, after some consideration, fined defendant
      10s., costs 13s. 6d.

    • From image of PR entry (on FMP, viewed 6 Dec 2013) - shows Edward Charrison and Charlotte Dray, bachelor and spinster, married by banns, both made their marks; witnesses were Henry Shedarich(?) who made his mark and Elizabeth Charrison who signed.
No real clue as to Edward's parents in marriage entry; Evans and Mary Ann did have a daughter Elizabeth who could well have been the one to witness the marriage, but she could easily have done that if a cousin rather than a sister.
