- From the 1871 and 1881 censuses - shown as 47 in the former, 52 in the latter! I am guessing that 47 might be to make the age difference look less and 52 more accurate.
Gender Female Died Between 1881 and 1891 - No death of an Eliza or Elizabeth of the right age in Devon between 1881 and 1891. Maybe it wasn't registered with her surname as Pitts.

Other Partners: Sally Wadland HASLETT m. Sep Q 1843Married Between 1861 and 1871 - In 1871 and 1881 John was with a wife Eliza. However, the index on FreeBMD does not have a marriage of an Eliza to a John Pitts that seems plausible.
Given that I can also not find a death to fit that of Eliza, as suggested by the census, I suspect that John and Eliza may not have married.
