John and Alice Glanville and their (headless) children
It is curious that the effigies of the children have been beheaded (5) and disappeared altogether (2), while John and Alice have remained more-or-less intact (some damage to their noses seems to have occurred but been repaired).
Mrs Bray and others claim the damage was done by parliamentarian troops during the civil wars. While noting that there is no evidence given Gerry Woodcock notes that the "family ... at Kilworthy, provided ... the most prominent spokesmen in Tavistock of the royalist cause", so seeming to support the idea. The position of the one remaining son suggests he is the second, John, and it may be significant that whilst John had moved away the other two lived locally. Perhaps they were consequently more hated by those on the side of parliament, although both died before the wars started, the eldest, Francis, over 3 years before and Thomas about 5 months before.
Although John had moved away from the area, to Broad Hinton in Wiltshire, his family's allegiance is clear; his eldest son (Francis) was killed fighting on the Royalist side at the Battle of Bridgwater in 1645, whilst daughter Mary had moved back nearer to Tavistock. She had married Piers Edgcumbe, and whilst their main home was at Mount Edgcumbe they spent the war years just across the Tamar at Cotehele.
Perhaps the question is not so much why were the effigies damaged, but why did John and Alice escape with little or no damage? Does this reflect the esteem in which they were held?
