The inscriptions on the Glanville Memorial
Transcription of the plaques with (my - hence rough) translations of the Latin:
The plaque at the top commemorates Judge John Glanville.
| "Honoraia sacrum memorium Johanis Glanvill, unius quoniam Justiclariorum de communi Banco: qui merito factus Judex sumo cum Labore administravit Justitiam, Justitia conservavit Pacem. Pace expectavit Mortem et Morte invenit Requiem 27 die Julii Anno Dom 1600:" | "In honour and sacred memory of John Glanvill, one of the Judges of the Common Bench, who achieved good Judgements with his work to administer Justice, Justice preserving Peace. Peace comes with Death and he came to the rest of death on 27 day of July in the year of Our Lord 1600" |
(it is clear it was first inscribed Auguste and this was then changed to Julii)
That on the bottom left describes his wife:
| "Statutum erat hoc Monumentum Anno Dom. 1615 impensis Domina Aliciæ Godolphin viduæ, prius uxoris eiusdem Johis Glanvill renupta vero Francisco Godolphin militi, iam etiam defuncto quæ peperit eidem Johi viro suo 7 liberos quorum nominæ et connubia proxima tabula suo ordini continentur." | "This monument was set up in the year of Our Lord 1615 at the expence of Lady Alice Godolphin widow, first the wife of the same John Glanvill remarried to Francis Godolphin knight, also now deceased who gave birth with the same John to 7 children Their names and marriages are contained on the next board." |
That on the bottom right lists the children of John and Alice:
| "1 Maria defuncta nupta Edwardus Estcourt ar: postea militi 2 Franciscus qui duxit in uxorim Elizabetham filiam Willmi Crymes ar: 3 Dionilia [sic] nupta Thomæ Polwheile ar: 4 Johannes qui duxit in uxorem Winnifredam filiam Willmi Burcheir ar 5 Alicia defuncta innupta 6 Johanna nupta Sampsoni Hele ar 7 Thomas." | "1 Mary, deceased, who was married to Edward Estcourt Esq. then Knight 2 Francis who took as wife Elizabeth daughter of William Crymes Esq. 3 Dionilia [Dionisia] married to Thomas Polwhele Esq. 4 John who took as wife Winifred daughter of William Burcheir Esq. 5 Alice, deceased, unmarried 6 Johan married to Sampson Hele Esq. 7 Thomas" |
(Thomas's wife, Joanna Calmady, is not named as they did not marry until about 1624, some 9 years after the monument was erected)
