Name Emily VOGWELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born 20 Jan 1870 Penaton Farm, Whitchurch, Devon, England [2] - Month frrom the 1870 US Federal census (shown as Jan and age given as 7/12); date from memories of her daughter Marian - although she recorded the year as 1871!
GRO ref: VOGWILL, Emily q1 1870 Tavistock RD 5b 391
(I suspect that 'Penaton' is a phonetic variant of Pennngton, to be investigated)
Gender Female Adopted Abt Oct 1870 Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois, USA [3] - Formally adopted by her natural (i.e. biological) great uncle, George Vogwell, and his wife; said to have been adopted when her mother died (when she was 9 months old).
Visiting 1872 Whitchurch, Devon, England - Although Emily grew up in Chicago her daughter recorded that when she was 3 years old she was taken back to England as her Piper grandmother was keen to see her. (A passenger list shows Emily with her adopted parents left the UK in 1872, and I think this must be the trip referred to)
Her great grandfather Henry Vogwill had died the previous year, and a wooden trunk he is believed to have made was taken back with them to the USA (still in the possession of Emily's daughter Marian in 1962)
Voyage - departure Bef 29 Mar 1872 Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland - Emily sailed back to the US with her adoptive parents (her great uncleand aunt), aged 2 year old Emily on the S. S. Anglia. (Her name was recorded as Emma)
They were shown amongst passengers who had boarded the ship at "Glasgow & Morville", and in the 'country to which they severally belong' column was shown U, so all 3 were shown as US citizens by this time.
Emily's daughter recorded that the family returned for a visit to England so that Emily's (natural) maternal grandparents could see her. Since they were in West Devon (I believe - not checked) but the family departed from Scotland, I think they must have also travelled up north, probably to Northumberland to visit relations there, perhaps particularly Emily's paternal grandfather and George's brother, Henry Vogwill, who moved to Cramlington around this time.
Voyage - arrival 29 Mar 1872 New York Co., New York, USA Moved Abt 1892 Lowerline Street, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA - Soon after the death of her father by adoption, Emily, her husband Matthew, mother (by aoption) Maria and baby Marian moved to New Orleans, living at first in a cottage in Lowerline Street.
Moved Oct 1895 1034, Carrollton Avenue, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA [4] Child Status Adopted Died 9 Feb 1953 Kingston-upon-Thames, Surrey, England [5] Half-siblings 2 half brothers (family of George VOGWELL and Jane STONE) Person ID I12538 All Last Modified 8 Nov 2018

Maria is listed after George in the 1870 US Federal census, described as keeping house (relationship not shown).
Also in the house is an Emanuel Vogwill with presumably wife and baby, but Emanuel was George's nephew not son.
Emmanuel's wife died and their baby, Emily, was adopted by George and Maria.

Since this info. from family knowledge agrees with a GRO ref. for the marriage of a George Vowill in all respects (date, place and bride's name) I'm sure it must be right.
This source gives how the couple met and the actual date.
