Name John SHEPHERD Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1686 Thurlestone, Devon, England - (assumed from baptism)
Baptised 16 Jul 1686 All Saints’ Church, Thurlestone, Devon, England - ** I am not sure this is the right baptism for this John **
Although it is the only baptism of a John Shepherd in Thurlestone in the right era (using FMP index), a different John married Nicholl in 1678. (Can't be the same John marrying twice because Nicholl didn't die unti 1707)
More work needed to try to disentangle the Thurlestone Shepherds - especially the Johns (of whom there were too many)
Gender Male Residence 1714 Buckland, Thurlestone, Devon, England - Recorded as 'of Buckland' when son John was baptised.
n.b. too much should not be read into this place of residence. Buckland was a village in the parish, not a farm; on the Old Series OS map it looks about the same size as the village of Thurlestone. Hence finding any other Shepherds were also in Buckland is not an indication of a close link.
Miscellaneous Mar 1739 Bigbury Bay, Devon, England Plundering wrecked ship - A 'John Shepheard of Thurlstone yeoman' was mentioned amongst those reported to have been seen 'to be very active and assisting in plundering and carrying off part of the cargo of the said ship.'
DRO catalogue entry
Was it this John, his son or another?
Died - Unfortunately there were many John Shepherds in the area. There were burials in Thurlestone alone in 1731,33, 66, 74, 75. Unfortunately since the burial register makes no comment when Catherine was buried we don't even know if John died before or after her.
The 1766 burial can be ruled out - entry shows 'a Lad'.
The 1733 burial was listed after a baptism of a John Shepherd - a month later. I suspect it was the baby John who was being buried, though can't be certain.
Siblings 3 brothers and 2 sisters Patriarch & Matriarch John SHEPHERD, b. Est 1530, bur. 31 Mar 1596, All Saints’ Church, Thurlestone, Devon, England (Age ~ 66 years) (2 x Great Grandfather)
English, bur. 4 Oct 1729, All Saints’ Church, Thurlestone, Devon, England (Mother)Notes - (Research):** There were too many John Shepherds in Thurlestone - there may well be errors in this part of my tree, it is a 'work in progress' **
I have not yet looked in detail at all the Shepherds in and around Thurlestone around John's time, but I have seen that a John and Joane had a daughter Agnes baptised in 1709. She was baptised 1st May, and Joane the wife was bur 7th. It looks like Joane died soon after having Agnes, quite likely as a in childbirth. (Not found any other children of John and Joane)
And it may well have been that the husband this John, who then married Catherine.
(An Agnes was bur in Thurlestone in 1726 who could well be the above Agnes; another had been buried in 1725 but shown as widow so clearly not the above - maybe John was naming his daughter after his mother?)
A 'Katharine Shepherd' married in Thurlestone in 1729. Who was this? - the widow of John? - but not found a burial of a John by then. Or a daughter, maybe baptised elsewhere before they moved to Thurlestone? Or chance?
Honor was not that common a Christian name, but in giving it to a daughter John may have been keeping a family name in use.
- an Honor Shepperd was baptised in Thurlestone on 15 May 1634 , dau of Nicholas and Elizabeth.
An Honor, the wife of Andrew, was buried there in 1684.
Subsequently, an Honour Tuckerman SHEPHERD had an illegitimate son Samuel bap in Thurlestone 9 Jun 1782. This may be the same Honor, abode Buckland Mills, Thurlestone, who was buried 3 May 1840.
