  • Name Elizabeth MUSCHAMP
    Relationshipwith Teresa Ann GOATHAM
    Born Est 1545
    Gender Female
    Bequest 1578
    From her uncle Thomas Muschamp
    • "I give and bequeath unto my Cosin Margarett Hodgeson nowe the wief of [blank] Hodgeson of Wingham in the Countie of Kente and unto my Cosin [blank] Hawkes, nowe the wief of [blank] Hawkes of [blank] in the saide Countie of Kente, beinge twoo of the daughters of my saide brother John Muschampe Fourtie shillinges in money, viz To eyther of them Twentie shillinges" - although it says Margaret not Elizabeth, and Hodgeson not Hodgekins, I think it is a bequest to Elizabeth, given that I have not come across any other reference to John having a daughter Margaret, and the general uncertainty about the names of these two nieces.
    Died Aft 1617
    • Living when her sister Jane wrote her will in 1617
Siblings 6 brothers and 1 sister
Half-siblings 2 half brothers and 1 half sister (family of John MUSCHAMP and Anne FRESBYE
    Patriarch & Matriarch
MUSCHAMP,   d. Yes, date unknown  (3 x Great Grandfather)
    Agnes BARKER,   b. Est 1500,   d. Aft 1521  (Age ~ 22 years)  (Grandmother)
    Notes
    • (Research):Elizabeth was referred to as 'Elizabeth Muschamp my wifes sister wyfe of John Grey' in the will of Jane's husband Sampson Halke. I think that Muschamp was her maiden name, and in the will to show the link to Jane.

Father John MUSCHAMP,   b. 8 May 1509,   bur. 18 Jan 1586/87, St. Stephen’s Church, Walbrook, London, England See the place on a map and other information about it - if available (many more will be in time); also all individuals with events at this location  (Age ~ 77 years)
Other Partners: Anne FRESBYE  m. Est 1559
Mother Helen GAYNSFORD,   b. Est 1520,   d. Yes, date unknown
    Married Est 1538
    • John was married more than once, and the Collectanea topographica et genealogica ('CTG') and The visitations of the county of Surrey ('Surrey vis') disagree about which wife was the mother of which children, each showing the reverse of the other!
The dates of baptisms of the children and the burial of John's wife Anne seem to point to the mother's being as shown here.
I hope there may be surviving wills for members of the wives' families which may confirm this.

    Family 1 Thomas HODGEKINS,   d. Between 1572 and 1601
    Married Bef 1566
    • Elizabeth shown as the wife of Thomas Hodgekins in her aunt Mary Muschamp's will, also so shown in the Surrey vis book. The latter incorporates data from the visitations of Surrey in 1530, 1572 and 1623. Since Elizabeth was probably not born by 1530 and a Grey by 1623 this information must come from the 1572 visitation, and seems to show she was still married to Thomas then.

Thomas is shown as 'of Kent' in the visitation. Elizabeth and her husbands may well have lived near her sister Jane and Janes's husband Sampson Halke, as Elizabeth and her children are the only relations of Jane beyond her immediate family named in her (Jane's) and Sampson's wills.

    Family 2 OSBORNE,   d. Bef 1601
    Married Bef 1601
    • Elizabeth was a Grey both in 1601 when her brother-in-law Sampson Hawke wrote his will and in 1617 when her sister Jane wroter hers, leaving bequests to Elizabeth's Osborne children, so the marriage to an Osborne was before that to John Grey.
I don't know if the marriage to an Osborne was before or after the marriage to Thomas Hodgekins, but I suspect after, since Elizabeth was probably quite young in 1566 (at which time she was married to Thomas) as at that time she had a number of siblings aged under 21.
