Bequest Abt 1781 [2] Will of William Harwood, husband of his aunt Mary (Shelly) - So far I have only seen summary of the will, which shows "the Children of Henry Tapner late of Funington (Funington?) Sussex Bricklayer deceased". The will was written in 1758, proved in 1781, so William must have died between the two, probably shortly before the will was proved.

Mary HOLKHAM to Joseph TAPNER
A snag with this being the right marriage is the baptism of Rachel in 1772. That there was a Joseph Tapner who married Mary Hacom in 1778 seems clear. So were there 2 Josephs, did this one marry twice or was there a mistake in the baptism register and Rachel was not the son of Joseph? (see Rachel's entry for more on this last possibility)
Whatever the answer, it seems reasonable to suppose that the children bapt in Boxgrove 1778 - 1789 were the offspring of the Joseph and Mary who married in 1778.
The SFHG Marr Index has separate entries for the marriage licence (see below) and the marriage, 2 days later.
It shows the marriage as taking place in Westhampnett.
Tony Holkham's index, however, which also has entries for both the licence and the marriage shows the marriage as having been at Boxgrove! It has witnesses for the wedding - Richard Smith and William Rapson.

Gives year as 1743. Entry on FamilySearch website. Prob OS date as most FamilySearch entries are, and another FS entry for the same marriage gives year as 1744.
Both entries give Grace's surname as Shelly despite that being her maiden name and her having been married to Philip Newman.
