    • An IPM for a William Symons (gent) of Plymouth refers to property in Trevill Street. in Old Towne and in Weeke Street, Plymouth.

There are six of references to property in Trevill Street being owned by members of a Symons family.
Two in 1706 relate to my ancestor Aeneas and his mother Rebecca; . Aeneas' father was called Andrew but the Andrew in a 1663 transaction was Aeneas' grandfather. The Richard who conveyed property in 1659 was not Andrew senior's father, but is described in one document as a 'Cosen'. This could be ambiguous, but luckily the relationship is detailed in another: Andrew was the second son of Richard's uncle Brendon Symons. Richard, who was 'of Buckland Monachorum' lef a will which resulted in a Chancery Court case.
William whose IPM refers to property in Treville Street is also shown in that document as the father of Richard.

Five of the 6 documents are in collection number 1302 (Plymouth and Cornwall deeds), and they have 5 consecutive numbers in this collection of 444 documents, suggesting this was not the coincidence possible with a common surname.
But even if I am right that the property was passing down the generations in the Symons family it need not have been as straightforward as I suggest e.g. one generation could have been a childless uncle to the next, or the property could have passed to a brother. However, in the absence of other evidence a straight line of descent is simplest to suggest and adding them to the tree offers an 'aunt sally' on which to base further research.

    Notes
    • (Research):Although William was described as 'gentleman' there is no pedigree for this family in the Devon visitations of 1620. Although his son Richard was of Buckland Monachorum and other relations of Ashreigney and Burrington the C16th lay subsidies and muster rolls suggest the family was not from either of these locations.

Vivian's Cornwall Visitations does include a Symons pedigree, for a family of Hatt in Botus Fleming, just across the Tamar from Devon and quite close to Plymouth. Being from the notoriously unreliable Burke's Landed Gentry and other (unspecified) sources this is not a tree to be relied on, but it is clear there were Symons with money at Hatt around William's time.
The 1545 lay subsidy for Plymouth, though, shows several with the surname given in Stoate's transcript as 'Symon', so the family could have lived in Plymouth for sometime. In particular one Thomas was assessed as having goods worth £25, a good amount which could be consistent with a close relation of 'gentleman' William.
The most a Symon in Plymouth was assessed at in the 1527 lay subsidy was just £5 in goods, again a Thomas. Was it the same Thomas who had done well as a merchant and so was worth much more twenty years later? Possibly.

    • Based on a son (Brendon) being baptised in 1584; however, Brendon could have been the oldest or youngest of a large family, so quite a range of dates possible.
