1939 register entry for Janet E Barnes shows her date of birth as 9 Oct 1870. I am guessing she kept the same birthday when adjusting the year.

Interesting to see her true age (more or less) was now used (actually, she would only have been 98 later in the year, but the age is often a year out, calculated from year of death minus year of birth, without taking account of whether a person had had their birthday).
This is clearly the right death from the probate calendar information which shows that she was living in Purton at the time, but died in hospital, hence the different RD.
If registered by her claimed date of birth, 1870, then this one could be her:
Barnes, Janet q2 1967 aged 97 Islington RD 5c 595 - I think though this is probably the person shown as Janette Barnes, born 1867 according to the 1939 register, who was then living in Islington.

Janet Eliza's marriage certificate makes it clear she was a Goatham by birth. Her father was a Michael Goatham, carpenter - deceased by 1906. Her age suggests she was born about 1870.
Michael born 1834 is the only person to fit on both counts, but there was no Janet with her parents and siblings in 1871 or 1881, nor have I found her elsewhere in those years or in the 1891 or 1901 census.
My first guess was that too many children in quick succession led to her being brought up by relations (possibly using their surname). I also wondered if she could she have been an illegitimate dau of Michael's?
The 1911 census shows she was born in Bredgar so I'm sure she wasn't the dau of some other Michael Go(a)tham I don't know about.
But in the baptism records for St. John the Baptist, Bredgar there is no sign of a baptism for Janet Eliza Goatham or any Janet Eliza around this date.
I am now confident that she is one and the same as Eliza Jane Goatham, born 1863 Regular census entries can be found for Eliza Jane up to and including 1901, after which she vanishes, with no sign of her death. I suspect Janet's age was "adjusted" to make the difference to the age of her husband appear less. Throughout their married life she seems to have maintained the fiction that she was born in 1870 (it appears as late as the 1939 register), but the age given at the registration of her death was almost correct.
