GRO ref: TARR, Elizabeth q3 1862 aged 17 St Thomas RD 5b 49
The age is right, but if this is this Elizabeth, where was she in the 1861 census?
OR
GRO ref: Gardner, Elizabeth Gorham [sic] q4 1887 aged 39 Brentford RD 3a 65
Although clearly Gorham in the paper index (image on FreeBMD), the transcription of a burial entry and the new GRO online index both record Elizabeth's middle name as Gotham.
I cannot find the marriage of a Gardner to an Elizabeth TARR or NOTLEY (quick search, exact spellings), but more research needed to see if this Elizabeth could have become a Gardner (e.g. by two marriages)
There seems no birth registration of an Elizabeth Gorham NNN (any surname) during the appropriate period which encourages me to think this may be this Elizabeth.
Buried 21 Oct 1887 St. Nicholas’s Church, Chiswick, London, England Half-siblings 1 half brother (family of Charles NOTLEY and Mary Ann Gotham TARR) Patriarch & Matriarch Joan, d. Yes, date unknown (3 x Great Grandmother)Notes - With her grandparents at the time of the 1851 census.
- (Research):I don't know for certain what became of Elizabeth after the time of the 1861 census.
I have not found her in the 1871 census, nor a marriage nor a death registration that was clearly her.
In 1871 there was an Elizabeth Tarr who was a servant in Exeter, but age given as just 20, and birthplace as Stokeinteignhead as well as occuption all suggest not this Elizabeth. As she was living in Cheltenham in 1861 I thought she might well have married there or been there in the 1871 census, but I have not discovered one to fit. No obvious link in Hampshire or Dorset, where her mother lived, either.
I thought she could be the Elizabeth Tarr who married John Netherway in 1878; the PR entry for the marriage shows an age and a father's name which are wrong, which makes less likely. The census entry for this couple in the 1881 census shows the wrong birthplace and persists with the wrong age. In addition looking for an Elizabeth to match (dob, birthplace and father) in earlier censuses finds one which is a much closer match than this Elizabeth. Hence I do not think it was this Elizabeth who married John Netherway.
The above searches assume she would be recorded as Elizabeth TARR, possible with a middle name or initial. I have also looked for her as a Notley (her mother's married name, from when Elizabeth was 6) and not found her.
Possible from 1881
Between 1861 and 1881 I know nothing about Elizabeth, but whilst not certain it is her I think I may have found her in the 1881 census, and her subsequent death and burial in 1887.
The candidate to be this Elizabeth appears as the wife of one George Gardner in the census and on subsequent records. I believe George had been married before, and was widowered in 1878, so if they really were married the marriage was probably between 1878 and 1881.There seems to be no marriage of a George Gardner to an Elizabeth Tarr in this period, but of course Elizabeth could well have been married herself and married under another name.
The reason for thinking George Gardner's wife this Elizabeth:
- a transcription of the burial register gives her name as Elizabeth Gotham GARDNER;
- the death registration (GRO register entry) shows her name similarly, but her middle name may be recorded there as Gorham. The third letter is ambiguous, somewhere between the other 't's and the other 'r's following 'o's in the same hand.
- although George's wife could therefore be an Elizabeth Gorham NNN, I can find no evidence of a birth (in England or Wales) of an Elizabeth Gorham NNN.
- unfortunately the 1881 census does not give more than a county for Elizabeth's birthplace, but it does at least show 'Devonshire', which fits this Elizabeth. While Gorham is a commoner name than Gotham, it was not a name found in Devon, so it seems most likely that George's wife was an Elizabeth Gotham NNN.
Against George marrying this Elizabeth, he was from a family furthur up the social ladder than I would have expected Elizabeth to marry, and her age as given suggests a birth around 1848.
Neither of these reasons are sufficient to rule her out, and if it wasn't this Elizabeth, who was it?
It is possible that it was an Elizabeth Gotham NNN whose birth went unregistered, but in that case we would have a scenario where:
- the fate of this Elizabeth Gotham TARR is unknown;
- another with forenames Elizabeth Gotham went unregistered and unbaptised (or unregistered and middle name not used at baptism, or born abroad ... )
- there were no Gotham families of George Gardners class, so it is unlikely that even if there were another woman with the first names Elizabeth Gotham she would have been of his class.
This seems to me to suggest that it is highly probable that it was this Elizabeth who George was married to (or living with as though married).
Research to strengthen and/or flesh-out Elizabeth's story
List possible marriages of Elizabeth TARRs 1861-1881 (possibly NOTLEYs too), and of George GARDNERs to Elizabeths, 1878-1881: are there any marriages in both lists that could have been the same Elizabeth?
See the PR entry for Elizabeth's burial and check it does say Gotham for her middle name.
(Or buy local copy of death registration and check her name there)
Look at George's immediate family (parents, siblings, children) - did any of them have a link to Cheltenham or any other place where Elizabeth had a family link (Teignmouth, Leckford, Abbots Ann, Blandford, Weymouth)?
