- From the 1851 census, assuming Elizabeth the wife of William in that census was the same as the Mary who mothered his son in 1821. Also from the burial register.
If I am right that she had the maiden name Baker, then an Elizabeth, daughter of Robert and Mary Baker was born 14 June, baptised 30 June 1778 in Chudleigh, and a Mary daughter of the same couple was born 27 March and baptised 26 May 1782. These dates are the right ones but the opposite way around to fit with my theory that after William's wife Elizabeth died her sister Mary moved in to care for the house and children.
There is no obvious marriage or burial for either of these in Chudleigh. A Mary Baker did marry in Chudleigh in 1801 but she was described as a sojourner so it was probably not the Mary born there.
