    • In the Canterbury Cathedral Archives is a settlement certificate for a Richard Gotham dated 5 May 1702 - presumably this Richard. It is between St. Mary's Parish, Wingham (amongst whose records the certificate is held) and St Mary Magdalene, Canterbury. It shows that the latter parish were acknowledging that it was Richard's place of legal settlement.
Presumably he was living and working in Wingham at the time, but Wingham wanted to be able to return him to Canterbury should fortune not favour him and he be in need of assistance from parish overseers.

    Notes
    • No evidence found of Richard remaining on Thanet, or of a Richard born in Canterbury - hence it seems highly probable that it was the Richard baptised in St Lawrence who was buried in Canterbury especially as the marriage licence shows Richard as of St Lawrence but Jane as of Canterbury.
