- About 1851 or 2 from the 1881 census where shown as aged 29, but shown as born 15 March 1850 in the 1939 register. Since the birth appears to have been registered in 1851 I am assuming the date and month are correct but year wrong, although that means she would have been aged 30 at the time of the 1851 census.
I thought at first James might have married 2 Marys - in 1881 he is shown as married to a Mary A, agreeing with the name Mary Ann in the marriage index entry. She was shown as aged 29, born Tunstall.
However, in 1891 his wife Mary was shown as born Cheshire. In 1911 the birthplace was expanded to Congleton, Cheshire.
However, the length of marriage shown in 1911 was 42 years, confirming that there was just one Mary.
The only birth to fit was in Congleton RD; whilst mostly Cheshire this included a small part of Staffordshire, but not Tunstall.
