Drowned in a tragic accident, as reported in the South Eastern Gazette of 23 October 1866 (under heading 'Whitstable', p.6, cols. 5 & 6):

Whitstable - Two Seamen Drowned. - On
Friday afternoon, T. T. Delasaux, Esq., coroner, held an
inquest at the Steam Packet Inn, Whitstable, on the
bodies of William Hill and William David Charrison, the
former mate and the latter seaman on board a coal vessel
named the Mary Mack, who were drowned on the pre-
vious night outside the harbour, through the upsetting of
a boat. The proceedings created a good deal of interest.
      The following evidence was adduced:-
James Wood stated that he was a mariner on board the
Mary Mack, which, on Thursday, was lying at anchor in
"the nest," about four miles from Whitstable harbour.
Himself, the two deceased, and James Simmons left the
vessel in a boat that morning, for the purpose of coming
ashore to make purchases. They got on shore safely, and
at seven o'clock in the evening the party re-entered the
boat for the purpose of returning to the Mary Mack.
When about 50 fathoms from the harbour, the mast of the
boat was shifted by Hill and witness, and when about to
hoist the sail the rope became entangled with the block.
Witness took the rope to re-adjust it, and in doing so
mounted the mast. This caused the boat to capsize, and
all were thrown into the water. Witness swam to an oar,
and supported himself by it until a boat came up and
rescued him. Simmons caught hold of the bottom of the
boat, and by that means was saved. The deceased men
did not appear to be able to touch anything, and as they
could not swim were drowned. Witness and his companion
held on in the water until they were picked up.
William Asors(?) and George Friend deposed to having
heard cries from the water, and to rescuing Wood and
Simmons. They put off in a boat and rescued them, and
at a later period in the night recovered the bodies of the
      two deceased.
The coroner, in summing up, remarked that to his mind
the occurrence was purely accidental. The jury took the
same view of the case, and returned a verdict of "Acci-
      dentally drowned."
Hill had been married only a month, and Charrison had
made arrangements to be married on the return voyage.
