Portelli Guest House - Guest Book

Portelli Guest House - Guest Book

The guest book for the Guest House my great grandmother ran, with the assistance of my great aunt Ivy, in Dartmouth for 3 years from early 1918 to early 1921. Visitors included Prince George (the future Duke of Kent) who was then studying at the College, and Peter Rabbit (do look at page 12 to see his entry and mark)! Gratitude was expressed in different ways including in verse - see page 10.

The guest book was a plain exercise book - was this because this was started during the First World War, or would a book like this have been used anyway?

Many, possibly most guests, were due to the presence of the Royal Naval College in the town, but some were drawn by the Regatta.

Some visited for lunch or just stayed a few days - but stays could be much longer as indicated here by a family who stayed for over 6 months.

Do see this page for the picture of Peter Rabbit and his mark.

He appreciated the dandelions and grass - hopefully this prevented him raiding my great grandfather's vegetable garden (assuming he had one)!

(Did a rabbit called Peter really stay? - I don't know. If it did, I assume it wasn't THE Peter Rabbit

I didn't know my great grandmother but she sounds to have been a great person - kind, considerate, always cheerful and an excellent cook.

The flattering comments may be easy to write, so the fact that people returned is perhaps more of a testimony to my great grandmother.

My great grandfather was offered the opportunity to take electricity to Boston. The thought of a new life in America was too much to resist. And so they moved from Dartmouth and spent the rest of their days in Lincolnshire!
