Actual date and place from her husband's service record
Hetty named the 3 sons shown as sons of John Mendy when she completed a form in his service record after John's death, and they had previously been entered in his military history sheet. Unfortunately notes in a couple of columns adjacent to the information is unreadable (in the image, and I doubt access to the original would be permitted).
However, I am dubious about this.
In particular, William was born 9 Mar 1914, but I suspect John and Hetty only met after the 5th and 6th battalions set their base at Sheerness later in 1914.
Also, John would appear to have been in India in 1913 and not around to have fathered William.
John does seems to have been 'home' (in the UK) between 16 Oct 1914 and 23 Jun 1915 and so could have been the father of John. While John's military history sheet gives the impression he was in Frances from 21 Oct 1916 to 5 March 1918, his casualty form shows he joined the base depot on 29 Apr 1917. However, he rejoined the battalion on 31 May, a little early to have been Frederick's biological father, although with John and Hetty now married John would have been Frederick's lawful father.
