Name Peggy ("Sarah") ROSE Nickname Sarah Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1808 Barham, Kent, England - birthplace shown as Kingston, Kent in 1851 but Barham in 1861,71 and 81
Baptised 7 Feb 1808 St. John the Baptist Church, Barham, Kent, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 20 Nov 2020)
"Peggy, daughter of Richard & Elizabeth Rose was Born [blank] and Christened 13th. Feby. 1808
Registered by me James B. Snow"As well as Peggy, Richard and Elizabeth named a daughter Margaret, baptised June 1810. Peggy is the best fit on date as well as name, and there is evidence of Margaret in a different marriage, so I am confident it is this Peggy who is my ancestor, not her sister Margaret.
Barham Church and Churchyard Gender Female Occupation 1881 [Unknown] "formerly domestic servant" - Did she work as a servant following George's death, did it refer to her occupation before her marriage, or did she work during her married life?
Died 10 Jan 1882 Bridge, Kent, England Cause: Senile Exhaustion, Chronic Bronchitis - Death reg by son George.
GRO ref: FULLER, Sarah q1 1882 aged 73 Bridge RD 2a 495
Death certificate for Sarah Rose Buried 15 Jan 1882 St. Peter’s Church, Bridge, Kent, England [1] Siblings 3 brothers and 5 sisters Half-siblings 1 half sister (family of Joseph RENALS and Elizabeth ADAMS) Patriarch & Matriarch Henry ROSE, d. Yes, date unknown (Great Grandfather)
Mary WARD, b. Between 1703 and 1715, d. Abt 10 May 1787 (Age ~ 84 years) (Great Grandmother)Notes - George appears to have had just the one wife, despite references to her by two different names: Sarah and Peggy. After considering a number of possibilities and accumulating as much data as possible I believe she was Peggy née Rose, who was known as Sarah.
That I am related to Peggy née Rose, daughter of Richard Rose and Elizabeth Adams seems clear from an autosomal DNA test, where I have a match with descendants of two of that Peggy's siblings (Margaret and Daniel).
The use of name Peggy and Sarah:
Peggy when baptised (1808)
Peggy at marriage (1829)
Peggy in bapt register for children Sarah (1831) and James (1832)
Margaret for baptisms of Sarah (1834), Ann (1836) and John (1838)
Sarah for Ellen (1840)
Sarah in 1841 census
Sarah for Emma's bapt (1842)
Peggy for Harriet's bapt (1844)
? for bapt of Eliza (c 1846) [baptism not found]
Sarah for bapt of George (1849)
Sarah in 1851 and 1861 censuses
Peggy in 1871 census
Sarah in 1881 census
Sarah when death registered (1882)
Sarah when buried!
Birth certs of Ellen / Eleanor and George give their mother as Sarah née Rose. Did George remarry between the birth of John and Ellen? No marriage of a George Fuller to a Sarah Rose found between q3 1837 and end of 1840, nor the death / burial of a Peggy (or Margaret).
Sarah: census ages suggest b 1804-1808; Kingston (1851) or Barham (1861,71,81)
Sarah made her mark on the birth certs of Ellen and George
It has been pointed out to me that a Peggy Rose was baptised in Barham in 1808, and I see there was also a Margaret, daughter of the same couple, bapt 1810. Seems to much to be a co-incidence, we know Sarah was born Barham. Although Peggy is usually a shortened form of Margaret, in this case there is no evidence of Peggy dying and a daughter then being named Margaret - the two seem to have been treated as different names. In addition, there is a marriage of a Margaret to a William Smeeth which seems to fit this Margaret, and autosomal DNA confirms a match with a descendant of hers. I suspect that a priest was formalising the name Peggy when Margaret was recorded at the baptisms of three children and it was Peggy who George married (her birth, assuming she and her siblings were baptised as babies, was also more in line with the age in censuses.
I was inclined to think Peggy died and George remarried, but in 1844 and 1871 he or whoever gave the info. for the baptism and census had a memory slip and gave Sarah's name as Peggy, now I think maybe Peggy for some reason became known as Sarah and Peggy Rose was probably my ancestor. One possibility was that George was widowed and married Peggy's a sister.
Peggy's parents, Richard and Elizabeth, appear not to have had a daughter called Sarah. I have found that Elizabeth's maiden name was Adams and an Elizabeth Adams had a daughter Sarah baptised in Barham a few months before Richard and Elizabeth married there. Was this the same Elizabeth? Was Sarah brought up as a Rose and was she George's 2nd wife? Although born an Adams she could have used her step-father's surname and so her children been recorded with a mother's maiden name of Rose. However, both date and birthplace in the censuses where the name is recorded as 'Sarah' do not accord with Sarah's birth date or place. In addition George and 'Sarah' seem to have had their last child in 1849, fine for Peggy, baptised in 1808, but not so likely for Sarah Adams, baptised 1800.
I wondered at first if Peggy was known as Sarah to distinguish her from her mother - but then I found she was called Elizabeth. Maybe she lived with her grandmother and it was to distinguish her from her? It seems clear it was not a case of a middle name being used - not a single record records 'Peggy Sarah' or 'Sarah Peggy'.

Other Partners: Joseph RENALSBanns of marriage From 27 Apr 1800 to 11 May 1800 St. Mary’s Church, Bishopsbourne, Kent, England - The entry (KFHS transcript, CD 23) shows Richard as otp and a bachelor, Elizabeth's abode as Bridge, but the field for spinster or widow is blank
Banns of marriage From 11 May 1800 to 12 Jun 1800 St. Peter’s Church, Bridge, Kent, England - "Richard Rose of the Parish of Bishopsbourne and Elizabeth Adams of this Parish"
From PR image (on FMP) which shows 3 readings on 11 May 1800, 26 May 1800, 12 Jun 1800, though these dates may not be quite right. Banns were read on a Sunday, and although 11 May was a Sunday in 1800, 26 May was a Monday and 12 June a Thursday!
They were also supposed to be read for 3 consecutive weeks, and although in chapels which may only have had a service every 3 weeks they were sometimes read at 3 week intervals rather than weekly in the parish church as the law seemed to require, Bridge was a parish and would have been expected to have services every Sunday.
Married 21 Jun 1800 St. Peter’s Church, Bridge, Kent, England - Curiously, the banns were read in Bishopsbourne because Richard was of the parish, but the marriage register shows him as of Kingstone. Possibly abode and where he was born / came from had been confused - the latter shouldn't matter for banns and marriage registers.
Neither banns nor marriage register for Bridge show marital status for either Richard or Elizabeth.
The marriage was witnessed by another Richard Rose and a Sarah Rose - I guess these were the groom's father and sister.

Shows George Fuller, bach of Bridge, Peggy Rose, sp otp, both made their mark; witnesses were Wm Hodges (a witness to many - probably the Parish Clerk) and Sarah Keeler (both witnesses signed)
It looks like Peggy and George had a joint wedding with Peggy's brother William, who married Jane Keeler. Same date, same place and William and Jane had the same witnesses.
