Name Jane Scoffern BICKLE Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Jun Q 1846 Marystow, Devon, England - GRO ref: Bickle, Jane q2 1846 Tavistock RD 9 507; GRO online index shows mother's maiden name as Cole
May be the wrong reference. It is the only one I can find for a Jane of about the right age and the Reg District fits evidence from elsewhere, but even when young it doesn't fit with the age in the censuses; shown as aged 3 in 1851 and 13 in 1881, both implying born 1847 or 8. Ages aren't usually inaccurate like this for young children.
With Jane married and baptised in Marystow it is not surprising to see in the 1861 census that she was born there. However, the 1881 census shows her birthplace as 'Maristow Tamerton'. Maristow is a large house / estate on the edge of Tamerton Fol and Buckland Monachorum parishes, not farm from Plymouth while Marystow is a small parish somewhat further from the city. I guess the ennumerator heard Mar(i/y)stow, maybe didn't even know of the parish, and tried to be helpful and show the parish.
Baptised 11 Jul 1847 St. Mary the Virgin Church, Marystow, Devon, England - From PR entry (image on FMP, viewed 25 Aug 2016)
"July 18 No. 599. Jane Seoffern, [dau of] George and Catherine, Bickle, abode: Sydenham Wood, father a Labourer, ceremony performed by E Rimell" - under heading 'Baptisms ... Marystow ... 1847'
Gender Female Occupation 1861 Markstone Farm, Lifton, Devon, England House Servant - One of 2 live-in house servant with farmer George Hanns and his family i.e. his wife and four youg children, aged 1 to 7. Also living with the family was a 21 year old carter. George employed two men on the farm, the other was probably older and lived with his own family.
Died Dec Q 1898 Totnes Reg Dist, Devon, England - GRO ref: Weetman, Jane aged 49 q4 1898 Totnes RD 5b 113
Is this the right Jane?
The censuses indicate that Jane died between 1891 and 1901. This is the only death of a Jane Weetman registered in Devon between these dates. Although age given is a little young for this Jane, judging by her birth registration and baptism it is consistent with the age recorded for her in censuses.
Notes - (Research):In every instance where I've seen Jane's middle name, it is not completely clear whether it is Seoffern or Scoffern. I thought it looked more like Seoffern, but Scoffern appears to be a local surname, while no such name as Seoffern seems to exist, so I assume it was Scoffern.
