Name Robert PEPPERELL Relationship with Teresa Ann GOATHAM Born Abt 1822 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England Residence 1823 Torcross, Stokenham, Devon, England - Abode given when he was baptised
Baptised 4 Mar 1823 St. Michael and All Angels’ Church, Stokenham, Devon, England Gender Male Occupation From 1841 to 1871 Slapton, Devon, England Painter - Recorded as a painter in the 1841 census, and as a master painter in the 1851 one. No mention of this occupation in 1861 but in 1871 when he was inn keeper at the Tower Inn he was also recorded as painter. His brother George and 2 uncles had also been painters.
Occupation From 1850 to 1871 Tower Inn, Slapton, Devon, England Victualler - At the Tower Inn by 1850 (White's Directory of that year). Also recorded there in 1856 when events described in court case in Jan 1857 occured, also there at time of 1861 and 1871 censuses.
Both painter and innkeeper at the time of the 1871 census.
Robert was not the first in the family to be an innkeeper etc.
His sister Maria married Morty McMahon, who was innkeeper / vicutaller / beer retailer in Torcross in 1841. Following that his brother William was innkeeper in Torcross in 1851; William, though, had moved to Plymouth and changed occupation by 1861.
In addition to this, Philip Pepperell had ventured into being an Inn keeper in Slapton by 1850 though he either didn't take to it or was unsuited, as he'd returned to his previous occuapation of mason by the time of the 1861 census.
Philip, though, was not a close relation of Robert's, but the 2nd cousin of Robert's grandfather, so it seems likely to have been chance that two Pepperells were running hostelries just across the road from each other at the same time.
